The day started off with the normal routine. Get up, use the privy, get water, eat breakfast, pack up, and start hiking. Everyone at the shelter was talking about the first big climb, Sassafras Mountain. Pretty tough going up and down that, but the weather was great and the trail was beautiful. Early in the afternoon we stopped at Gooch Mountain Shelter to eat and relax. There was plenty of daylight left so KB (from West Va that I met yesterday), continued on and camped just off the trail at a place called Ramrock Mountain. We did a 'big' 11.5 miles to get there and we were a little worried about pushing on that far, but man was it worth it. The views from the rock outcropping were incredible. We arrived in time to fix dinner with a father and son that were up there too. A few minutes later 2 other hikers from the Atlanta area pulled in to camp, and we all got our tents and hammocks set up in our tiny little campsite. During the evening we could hear heavy artillery being fired. Apparently there's a military training facility nearby.
